Town beaches like the one at Marazion and Porthmeor are great places to spend the day, with restaurants and other facilities just a short walk away. Sumfest is the largest festival on the island, and in recent years Rihanna, Usher, 50 Cent and Stephen Marley have all performed (this year’s acts and ticket prices are yet to be confirmed). What is guaranteed is the unrivalled beauty of Montego Bay for a backdrop, and a week of live performances, DJ sets and street parties. If it all gets too much down on the sand, head to a local bar to take in a live DJ set – many of the island’s venues stage events to coincide with the festival. Accommodation-wise, Montego Bay has everything, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. But don’t expect to get much sleep, because the action generally starts at around 9pm and continues until the early morning. It’s a three-hour drive from Kingston international airport to Montego Bay, but internal return flights to nearby Sangster airport start at around £90. On the south west coast lies Gardénos beach, popular with sunworshippers, while Ágios Geórgios Págon near Cape Arílla is said to have Corfu’s cleanest, clearest water. And don’t forget Myrtiotissa to the west – an unbelievably pretty bay with golden sand, surrounded by steep cliffs. Although Corfu lacks the huge waves which advanced kite boarders crave, head to Chalikounas Beach and you can avoid rip currents or reefs and revel in the powdery dunes and small, consistent surf. Bali, IndonesiaAverage temperature: 29°CIt’s official: this Indonesian island has some of the world’s finest beaches. Kuta, in the southern Bukit peninsula, is one of the most famous and a handy 20-minute drive from Bali airport – prepare for the crowds and seaside hawkers that come with this accolade, but enjoy the cheap surfboard rentals and spectacular sunsets. After an alternative? Balangan Beach, on the other side of the peninsula, resembles something out of Robinson Crusoe, a palm-fringed strip of sand dotted with bamboo beach shacks and a temple (Pura Dalem Balangan) at one end. Divers and snorkellers will love Pemuteran, on the northern coast, where there’s an abundance of coral and chances to spot a whale shark or turtle near this arc of rainbow-coloured sand.
