Prime Minister Chastanet wants visa restrictions on Venezuelans

first_imgSt. Lucian Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, cited Saint Lucia’s security concerns in relation to the situation in Venezuela, as he asked his country’s authorities to look at imposing visa restrictions on Venezuelans visiting St. Lucia.“I don’t think we should make it any easier than the logistics already have for Venezuelans to come here,” Chastanet told reporters Monday during a pre-cabinet news conference.Ministry of Immigration to prepareHe announced that he has asked the ministry of immigration to prepare a document for cabinet to consider in relation to the visa restrictions.“Barring any impediment, we will impose it,” he said. The prime minister said he remained “deeply concerned” about the security threat to Saint Lucia and the region, generally, from the crisis in Venezuela.“If in fact the government is continuing to struggle to maintain law and order in Venezuela. We have seen an increase in the production of drugs coming out of Colombia. People are short of cash and therefore people are bringing drugs originating from Colombia, and arms, to sell in Saint Lucia and other Caribbean Islands,” Chastanet observed.St. Lucia opposed to foreign interventionMeanwhile, he reiterated Saint Lucia’s position against foreign intervention in Venezuela.“Saint Lucia has always held the position that we would not support any kind of foreign intervention in Venezuela whether by the United States or any other country inside this hemisphere or outside this hemisphere,” Chastanet said.last_img read more

Broward statue to be removed and stored

first_imgBroward’s statue to be removed and storedGarth A. RoseThe statute of the former Florida governor for whom Broward County derived its name is to be removed, because he was reputed to be racist. The decision was taken to remove the statue of former Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward which was erected at the county’s main courthouse in 1993, after a group of county attorneys determined that he was a racist.Remove Blacks from AmericaHighlights of the former governor’s racist attitude was made public via a blog, the JAAA blog, that, among other documents, exposed a speech in which in Broward called for that blacks be removed from America and be given their own country away from whites. “The white people have no time to make excuses for the shortcomings of the negro,” Broward wrote. “And the negro has less inclination to work for one and be directed by one he considers exacting.”A monument of divisiveness Resulting from these revelations the T.J. Reddick Black Bar Association, a group of African American lawyers, through its president Harold Pryor called for the statue to be removed, calling it “a monument of divisiveness.”Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief, county administrator Bertha Henry and courthouse officials agreed to remove the statue. To be removed in 2 weeksMayor Sharief said the statue will be removed in about two weeks after work hours and placed in storage. There are no plans for the statue after that, but some officials have suggested the statue should be placed in a museum or a library.“This is just a piece of artwork and has nothing to do with the commission,” Sharief told the Herald Tuesday. “Complaints came in and subsequently the statue will be removed. There’s really no reason for it to be there.”As news of the former racist governor spreads, some people have begun arguing for the county’s name be changed.Change county’s name“How could such a racial diverse county as Broward County, be named after a former racist governor?” Laurel Moss asked CNW. “African American and Caribbean American blacks make p very large communities in the county, and the county is named after a racist. That’s crazy. There needs to be a petition to change the county’s name.”However, Mayor Sharief said she does not agree with changing the county’s name and such a move is not under discussion by the county commission. Any such move would be extremely difficult, but would ultimately be “up to the will of the people.”The mayor said she discussed the removal of the statue with several people including Chief Administrative Judge Jack Tuter. Following these discussions, the decision was made to remove the statue. The statue was a gift made to the county in 1983.Broward, served as Florida’s governor from 1905 to 1908, and he died in 1910 at age-53.last_img read more

Bank of Jamaica to publish daily foreign exchange transactions

first_imgComputer generated 3D photo rendering. KINGSTON, Jamaica  – The Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) Monday said effective immediately, it would be providing additional information on foreign exchange market transactions in a bid to foster greater transparency.“The additional information being provided will be the volume and price for each US dollar transaction (buy and sell) of US$100,000 or more as reported by authorized foreign exchange dealers and cambios, and will be available on the bank’s website at the end of each day’s trading,” the BOJ said in a statement.Greater transparencyIt said that the move serves to foster greater transparency in the operation of the foreign exchange market and improve access by the public to market information. The BOJ said that the transactions will not represent all the tradings on that day but only the individual trades of US$100,000 or more and that the information will not identify the counterparties to each transaction. In addition, the public will be able to view historical data on this information starting with Monday’s data, the BOJ added.Lowering policy interest ratesMeanwhile, the BOJ has also announced the decision to lower the policy interest rate – the rate offered on overnight balances with Bank of Jamaica – by 50 basis points to 0.75 per cent per annum, with immediate effect. It said that this decision reflects BOJ’s assessment that, while inflation is expected to increase to average 4.5 per cent over the next eight quarters, there will be months when inflation will fall below the lower limit of the Bank’s target of 4.0 per cent to 6.0 per cent in the context of low underlying inflation.“The forecast is for inflation thereafter to approach the midpoint of the target gradually but at a slower pace than previously expected at the last assessment in February 2019. As with the last decision announced in March 2019, Bank of Jamaica’s decision today to lower the policy rate is intended to stimulate an even faster expansion in private sector credit which should lead to higher economic activity, consistent with the inflation target. This action will support inflation returning more quickly to the center of the target,” the BOJ said.Slight increase in inflation The BOJ said annual inflation at April 2019 reported by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica was 3.9 per cent, up from 3.4 per cent at March 2019 and 3.2 per cent at April 2018.“While annual inflation has been rising, underlying inflation remained low. Bank of Jamaica anticipates that inflation will rise towards the mid-point of the target by the March 2020 quarter as (i) domestic agriculture prices increase from the low levels of recent months to more normal levels and (ii) domestic economic activity increases in response to the lowering of the policy rate over the last eight quarters.”However, it noted that inflation is not expected to stay at the mid-point of the target but will decline towards the bottom of the target in the period after the March 2020 quarter and only return to the mid-point slowly over the ensuing three years.“This outlook carries a material risk that inflation will fall below the target again during that period in the absence of a policy response,” it said, adding “of note, the projected trajectory of inflation is lower than previously forecasted.“This reflects the Bank’s view that inflation expectations are lower than previously assessed and the projected pace of expansion in domestic demand in the period after the March 2020 quarter will be slower due to headwinds from the global economy.“The risks to the inflation forecast are assessed to be balanced. The main upside risk, which could cause inflation to be higher than forecasted, is the possibility of higher-than-anticipated crude oil prices. The main downside risks, which could cause inflation to be lower than forecasted, include better-than-anticipated production in the agriculture sector which could lead to lower food-price inflation.”The BOJ said, in addition, growth could be lower than projected if global trade tensions escalate.last_img read more

John Pettit – Playtech BGT: Unifying individual strengths, dynamics & intelligence

first_img Jason Ader – No Boogeyman… Activism will play a vital part in reshaping gambling August 20, 2020 Retail closures have ‘severe’ impact on Playtech August 5, 2020 John Pettit – Playtech BGTUnifying all of its sports betting assets under the Playtech BGT Sports division, leading industry technology provider Playtech aims to bring market innovation through the optimal convergence of its joint products, services and user engagement mechanisms.John Pettit Managing Director of Playtech BGT UK, Ireland, Australia & Asia details to SBC readers his firm’s serious intent at challenging the sports betting industry’s set norms and standardised values. _________________SBC: Hi John, thanks for the interview. The Playtech BGT Sports division was officially formed last November. As a sports betting technology supplier what new dynamics and capabilities will your team bring to market?John Pettit: With BGT established as the leading supplier of self-service betting terminals to retail, and Playtech at the forefront of digital gaming, complemented with the expertise acquired from our colleagues at Mobenga and Geneity, we are able to leverage our combined resources to develop a stronger product offering across the board. By bringing these exceptional teams together, we are capable of building market-leading solutions to operators which account for more than just the sum of our parts. We are a valuable component of Playtech’s future vision, and we are delighted to utilise the group’s proficiency in the digital sector to enhance existing products and develop future ones. The recently-launched BetTracker product, which continues to digitises the retail betting experience, is just the beginning of this process.SBC: Coming into 2017, Playtech CEO Mor Weizer has highlighted that Playtech will be outright leader in industry ‘convergence’ capabilities. How will the Playtech BGT Sports division help achieve this corporate goal? JP: Playtech BGT Sports is the perfect example of Mor’s vision for Playtech. Uniting our individual strengths and knowledge, we have worked together to create BetTracker, our revolutionary product which brings digital betting into the retail space. The betting shop environment has evolved over the last few years with the emergence of functional SSBT technology, but this will take it to the next level, providing an omni-channel approach for both registered and anonymous customers, both of which we believe is key to future convergence.Through digitising customers in-shop and taking them onto a mobile platform, we can open new avenues to users while providing a better, more flexible experience, driving incremental revenues for our operators in the process.Ladbrokes said SSBT’s accounted for around 10% of retail staking in last year’s Q3s, and combined with impressive margins at around the 25 percent mark, which accounts for a significantly higher share of gross win. It places us firmly at the head of the move towards revenue-driven convergence.SBC: From a sports betting supplier perspective, how are the dynamics between client and supplier changing? What new values and competencies do betting operators want from their system suppliers and their services? JP: One of our key strengths within the UK is that we work with all of the major retail operators. As the market develops, we are best-placed to develop products in-line with the latest trends and changing technologies. Because we have a direct relationship with the operators on the front line, we can draw on their unique insights. It is in the interests of both supplier and operator to work together to develop new products that provide a possible customer experience. This is why we actively seek a more integrated partnership with operators and work on a revenue-sharing basis so we are both invested in the success of the products.SBC: Playtech governance has stated that it now wants to focus on ‘lock-in’ technology provisions for its customers. How will this broad and complex concept be applied to Playtech BGT Sports’ sports betting provisions? JP: Although our strength remains in being able to offer an unbranched code base, developing products that can be rolled out across operators in various territories, the configuration allows us to customise these products to operators’ particular needs. We also work with individual operators to create products that leverage their own IP, such as Coral’s Connect card and Paddy Power’s Cash CardThe trend in recent years, particularly among the larger operators, has been for products that differentiate them from competitors, and while it is valuable to be able to widely distribute products based on a unbranched code, it is this range of configuration options that facilitates swift but differentiated developments.SBC: As a betting stakeholder, which new technologies and consumer habits do you feel will lead to new industry dynamics being formed? What should the industry be preparing for?JP: If you look at broader retail trends, the move has been towards self-service, while counters are disappearing as assisted service takes its place. We are developing a range of products built upon the same back-end that gives customers a far wider choice of exactly how they interact within shops. We are looking to build on the front-end experience and this is happening. Some of our current products on include the terminal, a fixed till, a mobile till and the recently-launched BetTracker app, all integrated with the same back-end sportsbook platform, so one backend can generate product improvement across the board.Customers are demanding that service is brought to them and so we see the shop floor as the starting point to ensure betting is as straightforward and accessible, just as it is online. The only way for the betting shop to thrive going forward is to be absolutely focused on service.SBC:  Finally, at an early stage for the Playtech BGT Sports division, can you outline the firm’s short and long term goals for its sports betting services?JP: We want to continue to digitise the retail experience. This process started around ten years ago in the UK with the launch of SSBTs. BetTracker is an important next step as we give the customer the advantages of a digital platform but within the retail environment. It is important for operators to understand that our aim is not to limit sports betting to the terminal, but instead to generate incremental revenues for operators, via some market-leading products while improving choice and ease for the customer. To this end, in-play betting is an area that is expanding very quickly. It is still relatively new for retail and something that couldn’t be effectively provided over the counter. Furthermore, because of the way BGT software interacts with players, we generate a margin of around 18% on in-play stakes, which is significantly higher than competitors both online and in retail. With almost 30,000 terminals rolled out globally, we are also in a position to leverage this estate to gain exclusive, best-in-class content, and we are always looking at entering new partnerships, as we did recently with an arrangement with the Racing Post in December. This is the first of a number of key partnerships, uniquely positioning us to drive a true revolution in retail betting._________________________John Pettit –  Managing Director –  Playtech BGT Sports’ UK, Ireland, Asia& Australia _____________________________Sports Betting Innovation & Technology will be discussed and debated at the upcoming Betting on Football Conference (3-5 May London Stamford Bridge) click the below tab for full conference details…. In a recent interview with SBC, Jeevan Jeyaratnam, Head of Compilation at Betting data and tailored odds specialist Abelson Info, predicted that it was “highly likely that some of the UK operators will offer VAR concessions as a sweetener to offset any potential punter antipathy towards in-play wagers.”And this weekend, Paddy Power have proved him right, offering a VAR money back special to new and existing customers with registered Paddy Power accounts, that bet on the FA Cup 5th round games which feature VAR, namely Chelsea v Hull and Huddersfield v Man United. If a punter backs a first or anytime goalscorer, and it is ruled out because of VAR, the firm will pay out bets in full within 15 minutes of the goal being disallowed.A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “Whether you’re of the belief that VAR ruins or saves the beautiful game, we don’t care, we’re paying out on it.“That way, when Lukaku finally scores after 20 attempts on goal against Huddersfield, and it’s ruled out, at least Man United fans will have full pockets.”Marketing & Brand Director Michelle Spillane added: “Paddy Power’s objective here is to bring our brand personality to a contentious topic – VAR.“We knew a lot of football fans were frustrated at losing out when a goal was disallowed. So we thought, why not turn it on its head?“So we decided to pay out on any first or anytime goalscorer that was thwarted by VAR in this weekend’s cup games.” Sharelast_img read more
